About This Project

My starting point, I guess, the trigger for this particular work was the male and female with paper-bag and cardboard-box over their heads. I created them both from photo-reference and imagination. Everything else in the picture is a entanglement of images thrown togetherwith intention and decisiveness.
So yes, although the work appears chaotic it’s actually planned and premeditated.
At one point I did realise that I’d paired couples – humans, ladybirds or, if you’re American, ladybugs, gummy bears and parrots. This was not intentional or calculated. Besides, the couple theme fell apart when I added three jellyfish!
Having told you that the chosen images were deliberate I still don’t know why or what the essenceand objective of this painting is!
So, in the absence of psychoanalysis, both you and I remain none the wiser.
My work isn’t always direct, it doesn’t carry a pre-conceived meaning. The message is in the moment it’s viewed and unravelled.
It will have taken me weeks and weeks (probably 10) to create and paint and when you see it for the first time, that’s it – instantaneous bewilderment!
I don’t paint bowls of fruit or vases with flower arrangements! Although I have decided on the title – A Collision of Memory and Make-Believe.
I think it sufficiently enigmatic to solicit confusion, wonder, conjecture and perhaps apprehension.
Which is fine by me!
