Orpheus and Eurydice (pronounced Yoo-rid-i-cee), were husband and wife, both characters that inhabited Greek Mythology.
Orpheus, a young male poet and musician was bestowed with enough charisma that he could beguile man, beast, even the Gods themselves with his music and song!
Eurydice was a daughter of Apollo, a nymph and cherished wife of Orpheus. They were besotted.
But shortly after their wedding Eurydice is bitten by a viper, succumbs to the snake venom and dies!
Filled with grief and yearning Orpheus pleads with Hades (God of The Dead) to release his wife.
Despite his dark demeanour Hades is enchanted by both Orpheus and his melodies and mellifluous voice. He agrees!
There is one condition, one constraint. Eurydice must exit the underworld walking behind her husband.
But Eurydice walks silently and Orpheus racked with anxiety and doubt, uncertain if his wife is following, turns around!
You see it’s all a question of trust.
And the consequence – Eurydice is banished to eternity and lifelong existence in Hell!.
And that, dear onlooker, is the fateful and torrid tale of Orpheus & Eurydice.
Which, despite my own lamentable and forlorn attempt, I’ve hopefully, immortalized in paint!
