The idea for this work is a memory from some while ago.
In 2014 I visited Vietnam and stayed in both Saigon and Hanoi as well as Halong Bay. My time in The Bay was fine but the weather was dull and overcast. As were my photographs and memories.
Then I uncovered a reference for this painting which is broadly based on the limestone outcrops that rise up from the sea in Halong Bay. Needless to say the place is a tourist hot-spot.
I’ve added to, embellished and exaggerated the visuals and painted, not from memory but from imagination! If that makes any sense?
It may well be a picture-postcard version. But, then again, I’d like to think I’m an optimist with a picture-postcard imagination and a very poor memory!
